The course combines the best of traditional methods with more recent approaches to help adult learners use English accurately and fluently. With its clearly defined learning objectives and authentic content, it helps to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.

It is aimed at enhancing adult learners' English skills for Work and Everyday Life

Who is the course for?

This course is for those for whom English is a second or additional language and it is aimed at developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills needed to settle in the country and enhance adult learners' employability skills.

What topics will this course cover

This course is designed to help students to communicate successfully. Integrated skills lessons are full of different types of activities (pair and group work activities, brainstorming, open discussions and others) to maximise your opportunities for practising the language in class and outside the class. The course covers the following topics: Get started, The way we live, Jobs, Life’s an adventure, the optician, How terribly clever! Feelings. The course has a strong focus on developing your conversational skills, covering the areas of grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and listening appropriate to the level.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Ask for information 2. Describe feelings and give advice 3. Use and spell correctly key words and familiar words 4. Talk about future plans 5. Give personal information

How will I know I'm making progress?

Your progress will be measured on an on-going basis and you will be assessed by means of tasks and progress tests to check your learning.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

The tutor will provide you with all necessary handouts and worksheets in class.

Reading and information sources

Students might be asked to devote some time outside the class to their English studies.

What could the course lead to?

The course provides authentic practice to help learners make the most of their lives in the UK and at the end of the course students will feel more confident about using English and applying for jobs. They will be able to do more advanced courses with WEA and search for jobs more effectively.

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
