Sewing for Beginners

This is the perfect sewing course for you if you are a beginner and new to sewing and wishing to learn basic skills in sewing and dress making. A step by step help will be provided during the whole course. You are free to learn in your own time. The class is very friendly, safe and supportive. Perfect environment to learn new skills.

Course aim

The purpose of the course is covering: Basics of using a sewing machine. Basics of dress making including ,taking body measurements and creating simple dress patterns. Introduction to different types of fabrics. Practice small sewing projects.

Who is the course for?

This course is for persons interested in learning new skills in sewing and dress making. There is no experience or qualification needed for this course.

What topics will this course cover

The course will cover, Use of sewing machine. Pattern making. Inserting a zipper. Attaching different types of buttons. Hand sewing.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Safe use of sewing machine. 2. Use of different types of sewing machine feet. 3. General maintenance of a sewing machine. 4. How to take body measurements. 5. How to insert a zipper. 6. How to choose a fabric from different types of fabric.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Informal one to one feedback will be provided. A group feedback will be provided.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Sewing machines will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you would prefer practicing on it. You can also bring your own sewing kit and thread. You will also need to bring your own fabric.

Reading and information sources

There is no reading/ preparation required for the course

What could the course lead to?

After completing the course you will have the opportunity to going to college for further sewing courses. You can have the opportunity to have a small business in sewing or selling sewing crafts.
