The course will introduce students to the practice and benefits of a range of Yoga postures, supported by the development of the breath, and relaxation techniques.

Course aim

The course will provide students with the necessary skills to practice Yoga postures, relaxation and breathing techniques in order to promote a sense of well-being.

What topics will this course cover

Students will be instructed on how to observe their breathing and subsequently how to develop their breath. The breath will then be utilised as the primary tool to enable students to move into, hold and move out of a range of standing, seated and lying Yoga postures, with modifications as are appropriate to the students’ needs. Students will be instructed in a range of relaxation techniques with the assistance of their breath. Students will be encouraged to listen to their bodies at all times and work within their capabilities to enhance a sense of personal well-being.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

The student will be able to:- 1. Name eight Yoga postures. 2. Practise ten Yoga postures in a safe manner. 3. Practise two breathing techniques to enhance the quality of the breath. 4. Practise techniques to create a state of relaxation.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will receive verbal feedback of their progress and given additional guidance, where necessary, to enable them to enhance their practice of Yoga.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Wear comfortable loose fitting top and trousers. Avoid eating a meal at least two hours prior to attending the class.

What could the course lead to?

Students should be able to progress their practice on further Yoga courses and develop a personal practice to meet their specific needs. Students will be directed to sources which may be used to enhance their knowledge of the subject.
