Transferable Skills

This is a non-accredited course aimed at increasing students' ability to use transferable skills across various areas of their lives. Students will learn what transferable skills are and how these can be applied in a range of formal and informal settings. The course will also focus on improving written communication skills.

Course aim

To develop students’ awareness of transferable skills and improve their ability to recognise their own transferable skills and how they can be used in formal and informal environments.

Who is the course for?

This is an entry level course, especially targeted at students who would like to improve their written communication skills. All students must have a good level of spoken English.

What topics will this course cover

The course will cover a range of topics, including: - What are transferable skills? - Formal vs informal situations - Communication skills (with a focus on written communication skills) - Interpersonal skills - Planning, organising and goal setting - Teamwork - Interpreting and processing information - Hobbies and interests - Forming and presenting opinions

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Verbal feedback will be given by the tutor throughout the course.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Students need to bring a pen to each session and a notebook if they have one.

Reading and information sources

No preparation needed.

What could the course lead to?

Students may wish to progress onto other adult education courses after completing this one. It will also assist students who are looking for employment.
