This friendly and relaxed class will provide the opportunity for you to develop your painting and drawing skills as well as your knowledge and appreciation of art working from the life model. This course is designed for all levels and abilities with individual guidance from the tutor. We will look at different approaches and styles of work in life drawing and painting and there will be opportunity to develop your confidence and individual way of working.

Course aim

To develop painting and drawing skills and confidence, working from the life model in a friendly and supportive environment, whilst extending knowledge and appreciation of art.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

The course will be practically based which will include various drawing exercises to develop skills working from the life model. We will explore drawing and painting techniques using a range of media. Students will have the opportunity to observe some practical demonstrations before embarking on using the techniques in their own work. We will also look at different approaches to working with the figure exploring different artistic styles. There will be one-to-one tutorial support from the tutor as well as the chance to engage in peer discussion regarding the progress and results of your work.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Use basic elements of composition to draw the figure Apply tonal range in colour to describe shape accurately Use a technique to develop accurate proportions Identify a strength and area for improvement in work Research an artists technique to use in class

How will I know I'm making progress?

Feedback will be given each session from the tutor individually along with group discussion and feedback.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

2b pencil (or various grades of pencil/graphite), charcoal and a sketchbook A4 or A3 or A2. Pencil sharpener, rubber and media that you want to use on the course. Advice will be given about materials during course.

Reading and information sources

Students will require some of their own visual resources which will be discussed on the course. We will use various art journals and magazines including International Artist, The Artist, Artists and Illustrators. Some books and web-sites where appropriate.

What could the course lead to?

Information on local societies and groups will be shared during the course as well as useful web-sites and further reading. Encouragement to further develop and continue your work out of class. The tutor can provide you with information about what you can do next with the WEA and other local providers.
