A friendly and relaxed class to help get you started and build up your confidence in using a computer! You will learn the difference between a computer, a tablet, an e-reader and a smartphone; how to create, open, save and print files, as well as discover a little about the internet and email.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to give students an introduction to basic computer and Internet skills and build up their confidence using a computer.

What topics will this course cover

Finding your way around the screen Getting to know the mouse and keyboard Basic file management Working with documents - Creating a document and entering text; Saving and printing a document Introduction to the Internet Introduction to Emails Staying safe through the use of strong passwords, recognising email scams and understanding online security

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Demonstrate a basic understanding of how my computer, tablet or smartphone works Create a document and save work in a designated library Print documents Access the Internet and carry out a simple search for information on the Internet Send and Receive emails and attachments Identify ways to stay safe online

How will I know I'm making progress?

Through quizzes, discussions, and a variety of set assignments, the tutor will ensure that students are making progress. Learning records will also be completed at the end of each lesson.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A notebook and pen for making personal notes and a file/folder for keeping work and course hand-outs
