Cake Decoration & Sugar Flowers

Learners will be introduced to and develop the skills in basic cake decorating and icing. The course may include the following: Royal Icing - making and piping skills, run out work, marzipan - covering a fruit cake, modelling, sugar paste - coating a cake, crimping, frilling, embossing. The second half of the course the learners will make a variety of flowers, this will include paste flowers, gelatin flowers, buttercream flowers, rice paper flowers and unwired flowers.

Course aim

The level 1 cake decoration and sugar craft course is designed for people who want to learn but unable to attend a course in the week as they may have responsibilities. the course will cover cake decorating skills and the advancing onto sugar flowers. by the end of the course they learners will able to make and decorate cakes with a variety of different sugar craft mediums.

Who is the course for?

the course is set at level 1, which will allow for new learners and for returning learner who which to improve skills.

What topics will this course cover

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Make and cover a variety of cakes using different mediums 2. To make a variety of flowers again using different methods and tools 3. To build confidence in skill and self 4. To develop comunication skills with peers 5. To make cakes for friends and family

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

cake making tools, icing sugar and sugarpaste. learners may need to by tools and equipment but that will be discussed during sessions.

handouts will be given and books are provided for your perusal

What could the course lead to?

the course can lead to level 2 or level 3 course. learners may wnat to make cakes for the public eventually.
