Mosaics for the Home and Garden Course will enable you to create mosaics, either as an art form or with a practical use, be it inside or outside. You will be given the opportunity to make, stepping stones, house numbers and 3D objects as well as mirrors. You will be encouraged to create your own designs using your own sources of inspiration using a variety of materials. We will look at the work of other mosaic artists and design techniques.

Course aim

Mosaics for the Home and Garden. This course aims to look at a variety of techniques in which to use mosaic to enhance your home and garden. Learners will be encouraged to create their own designs.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

Topics included are: The Direct Method and the Indirect Method, Stepping stones mixing your own concrete. Knowing the differences in materials needed for indoor and outdoor projects. Using mosaic on a 3 dimensional base Sharing your ideas and giving and receiving feedback Looking at the work of other mosaic artists.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1.Understand the differences in materials needed for indoor and outdoor projects. 2. Understand and be able to use the Direct and Indirect Method 3. Understand how, and be able to design your own mosaic on a chosen base, suitable for indoor or outdoor use. 4. Be able to self assess work, share and discuss your ideas with the group and give feedback to others. 5. Discuss the work of other mosaic artists, from the locality and beyond.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Every session you will have the opportunity to discuss one to one with the tutor your ideas and how to develop them. In a supportive environment, you will be encouraged to share your ongoing ideas and progress with the group. You will give and receive feedback. You will be asked to continually self assess your work, to seek ways to improve and develop.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Aprons are provided but you might like to bring your own. Tools are provided but you can bring your own if you have them.

Reading and information sources

Several books are provided to look at while on the course but any additional reading or research is a positive start.
