In this two day course you will learn how to use the sewing machine and experiment with the applique and free machine embroidery techniques. You will then use these skill to make a tote bag or an envelope cushion.

You will learn how to thread the sewing machine and have a go at using various stitches. Try creative applique and much much more.

Course aim

In this course you will learn how to use the sewing machine so you are then able to use these skills to apply to projects of your choice outside of the course.

Who is the course for?

No previous sewing machine skills needed.

What topics will this course cover

Learning how to thread up a sewing machine. Learning how to use a range of different stitches on the machine. Learning how to cut out a simple bag or cushion pattern. Learning how to follow a simple sewing pattern. Learning how to construct a tote bag or cushion.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Demonstrate and understand how to use a sewing machine Learn how to read and follow simple patterns Learn how to appliqué and free machine embroider Learn how to make a cushion and/or bag

Informal feedback, 1:1 with the tutor throughout the two days

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Equipment will be provided but if you have your own sewing kit or fabrics you would like to use please bring these along.
