This course is aimed at new and more seasoned writers, and looks at improving your writing via exercises in poetry and prose. Taught by a published writer, the course examines how to make the most of your writing, and have fun with it, no matter what it is you wish to write.

For both new and veteran writers to try their hand at exercises in poetry and prose, thus expanding their knowledge of creative writing.

Course aim

This course is on creative writing and how to make the most of it, via exercises in poetry and prose. Taught by a published and award-winning writer, it looks at how to discover your own writing 'voice.'

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

This course will look at how storytelling works, poetic images and their power, narrators and narratives, and how to make the most of written words. We will also consider how to craft and polish work.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Learning - Crafting and polishing work. 2. Editing skills. 3. Narrative tricks. 4. How to spot the most atmospheric words and phrases. 5. How to send work out, should you so wish.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Feedback from other students/ tutor - tutor is happy to read longer pieces of work.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Paper, pens, pencils, folder to keep work in, writer's notebook (either paper or electronic).

No course list but updates on book and web titles.

Further courses, continued writing, or longer projects.
