This course will investigate the development of the varied musical styles which emerged from the unique historical city of Venice, during the last four centuries.. Music composed by many composers will be studied e.g. C. Monteverdi, G. Frescobaldi etc.
Who is the course for?
What topics will this course cover
Identification of the basic elements bound within music. How to listen to music more carefully, with resultant greater enjoyment. Historical context of composers whose lives will be studied. Enlarge the Learner`s knowledge of the life, times and music of several significant Venetian composers.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
Be more familiar in listening to music more carefully with greater resultant enjoyment. Brief recall of the lives, times and music of several composers studied. Be aware of the development of Venetian musical style. Be encouraged to listen to more venetian music on Radio3, Classic FM and at local concerts etc. Recognise changing musical styles.
How will I know I'm making progress?
Through quizzes, discussions and learner presentations. Assessment will be staged i.e. initial , formative and summative.
What else do I need to know, do or bring?
No books/materials required.
Reading and information sources
Tutor will provide a further reading list on request. Library books may be available for Learners to use.
What could the course lead to?
Learners may wish to continue their musical studies by participating in instrumental /vocal performances of music composed by Venetian composers. Learners may also wish to attend as many` live` concerts as they can to hear more Venetian music.
