For students who have already some knowledge of Italian and would like to improve their skills.It assumes some knowledge of the present and past tense. The course will provide an opportunity to develop the basics of the Italian language practising conversations on everyday topics, listening to native speakers, reading authentic materials and writing accurately

Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop some basic Italian language structures and vocabulary to handle the demands of everyday situations

What topics will this course cover

Main topics: Revision of past grammar/vocabulary Talking about past/present and future events Express simple opinions agreeing or disagreeing

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Identify phrases and high frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance ( family, shopping, local area); main points in short, clear simple conversations 2. Identify main points in reasonably simple texts dealing with everyday topics 3. Handle short conversations dealing with most situations likely to arise while travelling; enter unprepared conversation on topics that are familiar or pertinent to everyday life (family, hobbies, work, travel and current issues) 4. Write short and simple notes and messages relating to matters of immediate need – fill in forms with personal details.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Handouts will be provided but a small/medium size dictionary (i.e. Collins) and a pocket grammar ( i.e. the Talk Italian series) could be useful to integrate the material given in class. Also it could be useful to have a folder in which organise the handouts given in class for indipendent revision.
