This course is aimed at people with a reasonable level of computer skills who want to know more about the Microsoft Office suite of programmes generally and specifically using MS Excel spreadsheets for accounting purposes and data storage. The course will also include a brief introduction to MS Access databases It is intended that this course will enable learners to identify future learning needs and identify other courses they may need to develop their skills

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at people with a reasonable level of computer skills who want to know more about the Microsoft Office suite of programmes generally and specifically using MS Excel spreadsheets for accounting purposes and data storage.

What topics will this course cover

The course will cover, at a general level, the full range of MS Office programmes and focus on the identification of the best programme to be used for specific tasks eg letter writing, accounts, posters etc. The course will focus in depth on MS Excel and its use as an accounting tool and as a data storage tool. The course will also allow students to study the use of MS Access for data storage and the setting up of simple databases including running simple data queries and information storage

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Identify the best MS Office programme for specific tasks 2. Create a simple spreadsheet to calculate budgets and profit and loss accounts 3. Use Excel to store data and extract filtered data from it 4. Use Excel as a project management tool 5. Understand the differences between Excel and Access as databases and be able to create a simple Access database

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will undergo an initial assessment at the start of the course and learning outcomes agreed with the tutor. There will be a written and verbal review at week 5 and an overall assessment at the end of the course. Students will demonstrate learning progress through satisfactorily completing course related tasks such as typing, opening and closing windows and programmes etc. Feedback will be provided to each learner at the completion of each task

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

No specific reading materials are required but students should be familiar with using windows and MS Office programmes

Reading and information sources

It is desirable that students can use MS Word, can create new documents and can name and save files in MS Windows

What could the course lead to?

The course will help students identify future IT learning needs and help identify suitable courses to meet their needs
