Sewing Machine Skills

This course will teach you how to use the sewing machine including; threading the machine and how to use the different stitches. For those who have existing sewing skills you will learn how to make more advanced sewing projects and develop your previous skills and knowledge. You will learn lovely decorative techniques including appliqué and machine embroidery. Once you have mastered the basics you will progress on to make a reversible bag, appliquéd cushion and have individual project time to develop your skills.

Course aim

• To learn how to use the sewing machine including threading up and trying the different stitches. • To develop your skills by making several items such as a bag, cushion a zip purse and a project of your choice. • To learn specific sewing techniques including, seams and hems, button holes and inserting zips.

Who is the course for?

Beginners and more experienced sewers, different projects are available depending on your prior knowledge.

Threading the machine/using the different stitches Appliqué cushion Reversible Tote Bag Zip purse Seams/hems/buttons Advanced sewers – piped cushion with zip/oilcloth tote bag/dressmaking project Individual projects to develop skills from previous weeks

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Thread up and use a sewing machine. 2. Learn how to sew and finish seams and hemming. 3. Put in zip. 4. To make a bag and a cushion. 5. To work on an individual project such as a dressmaking or home accessories project.

How will I know I'm making progress?

We will regularly discuss your progress and highlight areas for development and how you can achieve the course aims set out at the beginning of the course. You will receive regular feedback, throughout each session and across the whole course.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

You will be given a guide on your first session telling what materials you will need to bring each week.

Reading and information sources

Sewing books/magazines are available and the internet can be accessed for inspiration and ideas.

What could the course lead to?

Making craft items to sell or to move onto another sewing/craft course in another topic or a higher level.
