Have you ever wanted to brush up your English? Would you like to improve your everyday English skills and enjoyment of the language? Come and find out about English classes, running from September that lead to a recognised qualification. This taster will help you to decide if this is right for you. No experience necessary. Come and explore!

Course aim

This is a taster course. If you want to brush up your English and return to learning, come to this short course to find out more. We will do some fun activities, building on what you know already. We will also give an overview of the longer courses available in September and some information on how to enrol.

Who is the course for?

Anyone thinking of improving their English - from entry level up to level 2.

What topics will this course cover

We will include some fun activities (based on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening) such as: story telling and writing; communicating clearly- punctuation is your friend; spelling myths and tips; types of formal and informal communication - (workplace and social). I wil give you some information about WEA English courses in September and answer any questions you may have.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1 Have participated in two (or more) English learning activities. 2 Identified some of your literacy needs. 3 Gain an overview of Functional Skills English courses starting from September. 4 Have an opportunity to ask any questions relating to the courses.

How will I know I'm making progress?

In this taster session everything is informal so there is no formal assessment. At the end you should be able to identify for yourself any new things that you have learned. The most important feedback is to help you to decide about further learning so I will answer any questions you may have and give information.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Please bring pen. and paper. If you have studied English before and have any certificates please bring them. If not, come anyway.
