The course explores identity and how this affects our self-esteem. The course examines how you can reclaim your personal power without becoming aggressive or feeling negative about yourself. Students are encouraged to set goals, use techniques to become more self-aware and make positive changes to feel more confident to cope with everyday life.

Course aim

The course is about discovering your sense of identity and raising your self-esteem so you become more empowered and assertive. This will help in your everyday dealings with other people as well as increasing your sense of well-being, You will become more self-aware of your positive aspects which will increase your self-confidence.

Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone interested in increasing their self-esteem and anyone who feels they have lost their way or who feels unsure who they are any more. Students do not need any prior experience or knowledge but an open mind and willingness to make positive personal changes is encouraged.

What topics will this course cover

The course will explore ‘the ego’ or true self and includes techniques to discover this true self. It also looks at the differences between self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. There is an exploration into self-awareness and the use of visual imagery to get to know the true self. Some life coaching skills are employed to demonstrate assertive techniques and how to regain your own power. The importance of goal setting is described and demonstrated and ongoing action plans are encouraged. Students will find that understanding themselves a little better will increase their self-esteem and self- confidence, lower their stress levels and generally help them feel better about themselves.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Students should feel much better about themselves at the end of the course and feel motivated to continue their personal journey of discovery and in particular they should be able to 1. Describe the differences between self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. 2. Identify their personal stress drivers and ways of reducing stress. 3. Demonstrate a greater understanding of their true selves 4. Demonstrate assertive techniques 5. Develop a personal action plan

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will receive feedback both individually through observation of small group work and also generally through group discussion.

Please bring a pen, and an open mind

Reading and information sources

No prior reading is required but if students wish to, there are many self-help books available from the library.

What could the course lead to?

This course will give students an insight to the many tools and techniques available to increase their self esteem. The potential self-confidence gained from this course could assist students to continue their studies or seek employment.
