This course is for students wishing to improve their language skills and gain valuable experience in order to enter the English workplace. The course aims to improve individuals’ English language skills so they are able to fully integrate in society, search for employment opportunities and confidently deal with everyday situations.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to help improve students’ English skills so they have greater opportunities in securing employment and improving their integration into their local community.

Who is the course for?

This course is for students wishing to improve their language skills and gain valuable experience in order to enter the English workplace and fully integrate in society.

What topics will this course cover

The course will: • Consider complex information and give a relevant, clear response in appropriate language • Present information and ideas clearly and persuasively to others • Adapt contributions to suit audience, purpose and situation • Make significant contributions to discussions, taking a range of roles and helping to move discussion forward • Read and summarise, succinctly, information/ideas from different sources • Identify the purposes of texts and comment on how meaning is conveyed • Present information/ideas concisely, logically and persuasively • Use a range of writing styles for different purposes • Use a range of sentence structures, including complex sentences, and paragraphs to organise written communication effectively • Punctuate written text using commas, apostrophes and inverted commas accurately

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Prepare for and contribute to the formal discussion of ideas and opinions; 2. Present information/points of view clearly and in appropriate language. 3. Read and understand texts in detail; 4. Utilise information contained in texts; 5. Use language, format and structure suitable for purpose and audience; 6. Ensure written work includes generally accurate punctuation and spelling and that meaning is clear;

How will I know I'm making progress?

You will record what you have learned in each session. An individual learning plan will be used to assess your progression throughout the course.
