Using Computers: Next Step Computers

Building on the basics of computers and the internet, this is course helps you to start learning a little bit more. This course is for learners who already some basic computer skills and wish to progress. The course is intended to build confidence and increase your interest in computer.

Course aim

The aim of this follow on course is to build on students’ knowledge and help to continue to build their confidence when using digital/computer equipment.

Who is the course for?

All students must be in receipt of an income related benefit. Basic IT skills

What topics will this course cover

1. Learn how to use several software applications 2. Discover techniques to quickly and accurately search the internet for information, employment opportunities etc… 3. Understand computer security and safety online 4. Create and use an email account confidently 5. Understand what cloud Computing is and learn how to use it 6. Access Governmental services online - Universal Credit etc.. 7. Learn about social media and how to use it to network and find job opportunities etc.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Use several software applications 2. Quickly and accurately search the internet for information, employment opportunities etc… 3. Practice computer security 4. Create and use an email account confidently 5. Use cloud Computing and explain what it is 6. Access Governmental services - Universal Credit etc.. 7. Understand the uses of social media and be able to use it to network and find job opportunities etc.

How will I know I'm making progress?

This course is not accredited. The increased confidence will demonstrate progress and the ability to complete tasks and navigate around the computer will show competence. There will be plenty of time to discuss progress with other participants and your tutor and the Learning Record will ask you to comment on how far you feel you have progressed.

What could the course lead to?

You should feel more confident to undertake further study, either with the WEA or with another provider. The tutor will discuss further opportunities including follow on IT courses within the project. You may also wish to try accessing the Eastern WEA website, blog site and online learning site to discover more opportunities for learning.
