From Alexander to the Crusades, from the Sykes Picot agreement to the Balfour Declaration , this study day will consider how historic decisions have impacted on events in Syria and the region, culminating in civil war and the rise of ISIS. Let

Course aim

To gain a greater understanding of the Syrian war by a study of the historical and religious background to the present crisis.

Topics covered Syria as part of early empires - geography , political and economic importance Arrival of Islam - the religion and political expansion The Ottoman Empire - and its decline The importance of the post 1914 war settlements on the future of the Middle East The Syrian war - to present

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Have a greater understanding of the geography of the area and its political importance Have an awareness of the historical settlements of the early 20th Century that led to problems in the Middle East Understand the importance of the ideas of crusade and jehad and how conflicts have arisen between east and west because of religion Have a greater understanding of the Islamic faith .

How will I know I'm making progress?

As a one Day school this will be an accumulative development through discussion as information and understanding grows.
