Leonardo da Vinci was a designer of war machines, an architect, an engineer, a sculptor and a painter. This study course, based mainly on Leonardo’s own notebooks, reveals the extent of his achievements in the sciences and the arts.
To provide an understanding of the varied works of Leonardo da Vinci, and of how those works fit into the context of his life and times
Who is the course for?
None – other than an enquiring mind and an interest in the subject matter.
What topics will this course cover
Leonardo as: • A sculptor • A painter • A scientist • An anatomist • A mathematician • A cartographer • An engineer and builder … and an examination of the question – was Leonardo the “Renaissance Man” and “Genius” of legend? Or simply an extraordinary late-medieval figure? The course will also examine fundamental ideas about the nature of the universe that informed Leonardo’s work.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
1.Identify and discuss the cultural and political influences of Renaissance Italy and the extent to which they are relevant to the study of Leonardo 2.Recognise and comment on a selection of Leonardo’s artistic works, placing them into the context of the history of art 3.Discuss the extent to which Leonardo made contributions to modern science 4.Answer one historical question – was Leonardo a “Renaissance Man” and “Genius”?
How will I know I'm making progress?
No formal assessment will be undertaken. Students may assess their own progress from question and answer sessions moderated by the tutor.
What else do I need to know, do or bring?
