Singing for Fun & Confidence 1

Ref: C3670184

A singing course to build confidence, and have fun, while improving your singing and knowledge of singing. Everyone welcome whether you think can sing or not - it doesn't matter - just take part!

Course aim

A singing course to build confidence in all areas of life, as well as to improve singing and knowledge of singing, and to make friends and have fun in the process.

Who is the course for?

The course is for anyone who wants to sing, and learn a bit about singing. There are no requirements for enrollment.

What topics will this course cover

There will usually be a warm-up and breathing exercises at the start of each session. From week 2 there will be a 'Techie-Stuff' session, when learners will find out the more technical aspects of singing, including breathing, voice production, pitch and rhythm. Most of the time will be spent singing! At first we will sing along to a recording, then possibly backing tracks, and we will also do some unaccompanied singing, including singing 'rounds', which is the beginning of part-singing. This particularly trains the ear, as well as the voice. Sometimes we perform at local events, but students can opt out of this if they prefer. We sometimes have a theme, and students are encouraged to work on a related project of their own. Students will get the chance to sing solo if they so wish, and they are invited to take part in Masterclasses - this is by no means compulsory, and simply watching the Masterclass can be a valuable source of learning. Learners will be asked to bring a song that they would like the group to perform, but the tutor reserves the right to refuse if it is unsuitable.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Sing a song or simple round in 2 or 3 parts in the group Increased understanding of the basics of voice production, and the importance of efficient breathing techniques, and vocal warm ups. Increased understanding of the basic elements of music Feel an increase in confidence, singing in a small group. Sing a solo, or take part in a Masterclass if the student so wishes. Experience an aspect of social purpose in singing.

How will I know I'm making progress?

As well as quizzes, assessment will be by questionnaire and observation. There will be opportunity for students to have one-to-one discussions about their own progress.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

There are no materials that need to be provided by the student

Reading and information sources

There is no required reading for the course, although there will be a list of resources.

What could the course lead to?

Learners might want to join a choir or an amateur operatic society, or visit folk clubs and open mic nights in order to use their skills. Visiting the theatre to see Musical Theatre or Opera productions and Variety performances will widen the students' knowledge.
