Art Appreciation Day School: Victorian Narrative Painting

Ref: C3847055

The Art Historian Dana Arnold comments on 'how much we can learn from art, the diversity of ways in which we can enjoy looking at it, thinking about it, and understanding its relationship to ourselves.' Following this thought, this day school will introduce a selection of art and artists from the Victorian narrative school including that found in prominent local galleries (e.g. Manchester Art Gallery and The Walker Art Gallery) in order to ascertain the motivations and ideas of these painters, to think about how works of art looked and developed during this era, as well as how the Victorians thought about themselves and how art represented this. What was the function of narrative painting? How was this work received? We will reflect on different approaches to art through its visual qualities, exploring why it looks as it does, the aesthetic, historical and personal contexts that underpin this. To complement this we will also read some critical and scholarly works within art history.
