A short and interactive introduction to Italian Literature and the works that made Italy the country that is today. From Dante to the contemporary authors, this course aims at providing an overview of the major literary movements throughout the centuries, as well as the most famous authors. Throughout the course, we will discuss on extracts in English translation, unravelling the main themes and also discussing the reception of those works in English.

Course aim

This course aims to provide an introduction and a broad overview of the Italian literature and culture. We will focus on the role that literature played in the development of the Italian language and, later on, of a new Italian national identity.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will have a general understanding of the different literary movements in the History of Italian Literature and you will become familiar with the most famous authors and works published.
