On this course you will look at ways to add more information into your written work, making your sentences longer and more interesting. You will learn strategies to improve your spelling. You will use real life examples to read for information in a variety of situations. You will use pictures and the way that a piece of writing looks to help to find information and identify who it is for, and what it is communicating. You will use role plays to practise useful conversations (e.g. at the doctor’s, or in a job interview) and improve your pronunciation. Please note: Before you can join the course, you will need to attend an initial assessment session to make sure that this course is the right one for you.

Course aim
This course will help you to practise your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English. This course leads to the Functional Skills English assessment at Entry 2.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify the purpose, main points and key features in written texts
- Read and spell words correctly
- Fill in a form
- Write a short letter or email in complete sentences with correct punctuation using adjectives and conjunctions (and, so. but, because) where appropriate
- Explain my views and feelings clearly in a group discussion
What else do I need to know?
- What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.). - You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.
