This course introduces the basic techniques used in portraiture. Working from enlarged photographs, students learn to accurately draw the head, neck and face and to use light, shade and colour to create a likeness. The course finishes with a painting project.

To introduce students to the art of portraiture in a relaxed and supportive environment.

- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Create a reasonably convincing portrait drawing in monochrome.
- Create a reasonably convincing portrait painting in monochrome.
- Create a reasonably convincing portrait painting or drawing in colour.
- Mix colours and shades confidently to create life-like skin tones and other features.
What else do I need to know?
Essential materials: HB pencil, eraser, sharpener, A3 cartridge pad (tracing paper if you are a beginner). Acrylic paints: cadmium red, rose red, cadmium yellow, burnt umber, cerulean blue, ultramarine, black and white, mixing palette, brushes (masking tape and board optional).
