We shall explore the contribution to art by female artists from the Renaissance to today through careful study of works by artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Rosalba Carriera, Berte Morisot and Bridget Riley. Among the patrons to be discussed will be Isabella d’Este and Madame de Pompadour
Course aim
To introduce the learners to artworks created by female artists and commissioned by female artists in Europe focussing on content, style and the factors which hindered or facilitated their creation through the centuries.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- examine some of the works discussed during the course in a critical manner.
- list two factors which hindered female artists in achieving their potential in either the 16th or the 19th century.
- list two features of female self-portraiture in the 18th or 19th century.
- discuss the artistic taste of a female patron of your choice.
