An Introduction to British Sign Language

This course will introduce you to the wonderful world of British Sign Language. Learn the alphabet, simple greetings and basic conversations. Acquire a varied vocabulary through weekly themes and topics. This is an exciting opportunity to harness the fundamentals of BSL within a relaxed and supportive environment. You’ll be amazed at how much you can learn and the progress you will make.

Course aim

To provide an understanding and knowledge of basic British Sign Language with a view to applying learned vocabulary through basic conversation and communication.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Successfully sign the full English alphabet in BSL
  • To be able to fingerspell, and understand someone else fingerspelling, at least 8 different words
  • To gain the knowledge of at least 20 new BSL signs
  • Give a simple description of yourself and your life in BSL
  • Conduct a basic conversation in BSL (Asking questions and responding)

No prior knowledge is needed to apply for this course. Just a desire to learn. A pen and paper might be useful but not essential. Resources will be available (on Canvas) prior to each weekly class for you to prepare for our online sessions.
