In a violent and shocking century, the Holocaust for many represents the defining moment of inhumanity. How did Germany employ the full powers of the State and modern technology to kill between 5 and 6 million of Europe's Jewish population? We will look at the development of anti-Jewish measures in pre-war Germany before seeing how the outbreak of war led to a progressive radicalisation of policy. We will consider why as well as how this policy escalated to the attempted mass murder of an entire people. The subject matter is not easy but we owe it to the victims to remember the terrible events of these years.
Course aim
27 January 2022 is Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK. The course is intended to keep alive the memory of how and why the Holocaust happened. By remembering the past we help to guard the future against similar tragedies.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- describe how anti-Jewish measures developed in Germany between 1933 and 1939.
- explain how German policy became increasingly radicalised under the pressures of wartime.
- describe the many facets to the Holocaust and understand that Auschwitz is a key part but not the whole of Holocaust history.
- explain why the 'discovered possibility' of the Holocaust happened.
