The course will discuss the formal elements, the subject matter and function of one of the major themes in Western art through the analysis of selected artworks: among them will be 17th century Dutch landscapes; works by Constable and Turner; Impressionist masterpieces and contemporary approaches to the genre.

to provide an introduction to Western European landscape painting with a view to learning to look and understand both style and content

- list three types of landscape painting
- list two differences between the works of Constable and Turner
- give two reasons for the popularity of landscape painting in 17th century Holland
