In the Victorian period new technology enabled Londoners to live further from their places of work and to enjoy new ways of spending their leisure tme. This class will look at topics including public transport, the growth of the suburbs, and leisure and entertainment in Victorian London.

Course aim

This course will look at aspects of the growth and development of Victorian London, including public transport, suburban growth, and leisure and entertainment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This class is for people who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Reading outside class time is not required, but books and resources will be suggested for students who wish to do so.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the principal developments in public transport in Victorian London.
  • Describe some of the different types of suburban development.
  • Describe some of the different types of markets and shops.
  • Describe some of the different kinds of leisure activities pursued by Victorian Londoners

Students may wish to have a street map of central London to hand, especially if unfamiliar with the geography of London. An A-Z or similar is preferable to a map intended for tourists. Note-taking is not required, but students who wish to take notes will need suitable materials.
