Population growth and the continuing Industrial Revolution brought major social problems, while new technology had an impact on the lives of people at all levels of society. This class will look at topics including the Poor Law, public health, the impact of the railways, and the evolution of a system of state education.
Course aim
To provide an introduction to the major developments in social policy in the period, including poor relief, public health and education; to consider other developments which had an impact on society at the time.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This class is for people who have an interest in the subject and would like to learn more. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Reading outside class time is not required, but books and resources will be suggested for students who wish to do so.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Describe the reform of the Poor Law in 1834.
- Briefly describe how the public health problems were addressed.
- Describe the impact of the railways on the lives of ordinary people.
- Describe the provisions of the 1870 Education Act.
What else do I need to know?
Note taking is not required, but students who wish to take notes will need suitable materials.
