This course looks at a variety of coastal landscapes in the county from the creeks of Chichester Harbour to the chalk of Seven Sisters and the sand dunes of Camber. It also looks at the urban landscapes of seaside resorts, ports and 'sleepy hollows', the landscape of 'Sussex by the Sea'. The geology of our coastline underpins the history and economy of its communities; the beaches that entice visitors for a range of leisure activities are the same flint shingle, windswept sand and vegetated mudflats that saw boats built, fish netted and smoked, pebbles gathered for building and industry and provided landing grounds for ships bringing imports and carrying exports. As the industries faded so there was an upturn in visitors coming to 'take the waters', visitors who often stayed and created a new form of community, one of tourism and leisure trades.
