The course aims to study key speeches/scenes from different plays by reading together and watching/listening to performances on dvd/audio.The focus will be on how how the speeches work in performance. We will engage with linguistic and performance challenges which the texts present to actors, directors and designers. By analysing a variety of performances we will be able to evaluate the choices made.

An opportunity to study key speeches/scenes with a focus on the female characters such as Juliet, Lady Macbeth, Viola, and Portia.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Read and discuss a speech/scene from an informed perspective
- Identify the genre and thematic concerns of the speech/scene
- Analyse and evaluate ideas for staging.
- Compare /contrast different interpretations of a character /role.
What else do I need to know?
- You may like to bring a copy The Complete Works so that you can read around the speeches/scenes. I will provide extracts of the chosen speeches and a synopsis of the play for those who need it. You may find a notebook and pen and penil useful.
