The Great Western Railway was one of the biggest railway companies, from the outset being ambitious in its aims, even looking to New York. In this day school we will examine the work of Brunel and why he chose to build the railway as he did. We will examine the work of the engineers who followed and what they achieved. We will examine the Great Western's brand and why it was so important to them. We will discover how the company created luxury travel and seaside resorts and its cultural impact which remains with us today.
Course aim
To provide a study of the Great Western Railway and how the company operated, its engineering and the creation of holiday resorts.
