The existence of evil in the world provides the principal (philosophical) grounds to question God’s existence. This Study Day is an introduction to the problem of evil. It will consider the problem and it will consider one of the principal varieties of the problem, viz. the logical problem of evil. It will also consider one of the principal explanations of the existence of evil in a world created by God.
Course aim
To provide an introduction to the problem of evil and an introduction to one of its principal varieties, the logical problem. To provide an introduction to one of the principal explanations of the existence of evil in a world created by God.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No prior specialist knowledge is required to attend this Study Day.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- discuss the problem in the context of the discipline which considers it.
- discuss the problem itself.
- discuss one of the principal varieties of the problem, viz. the logical problem of evil.
- discuss one of the principal explanations of the existence of evil in a world created by God.
What else do I need to know?
It is not necessary to do any reading for the Study Day. But, a reading list will be provided. The books on it may be referred to for the course or they may be referred to in the future.
