Egyptian Art Revealed

Ref: C3747065

After the pyramids, some of the most memorable images of ancient Egypt are provided not by royal monuments, but from the art of the tombs of private (albeit elite) officials who served the pharaoh. In this course we will explore a range of tomb images from the Egyptian New Kingdom. We will discuss specific elements within these scenes, identify canonical iconography, typical Egyptian artistic techniques and discuss the purpose and symbolism of such scenes. In image-rich sessions designed to combine depth and breath we will take 'virtual tours' of a range of tombs, from those of New Kingdom Memphite officals buried in Saqqara, to officals buried in Thebes including the burials of the (senior) craftsmen of the workmen's village of Deir el-Medina. We will also have an opportunity to contrast 'orthodox' traditonal art with that of the Amarna period as we explore tomb scenes from the site of el-Amarna.
