Ancient Egypt Under Threat

Ref: C3747059

In this course we witness the endurance of the ancient Egyptian culture in different circumstances. As the Egyptian New Kingdom collapsed Egypt divided, local Delta rulers and Libyan descendants became pharaohs in the north with Theban High Priests of Amun in the south. The division of the Third Intermediate Period finally ushured in Kushite Period of Nubian rule of the so-called 'Black Pharaohs' who embody Egyptian traditions as a native dynasty. The Assyrians who followed appointed local Egyptian vassels, although Psamtek I was able to form a strong local dynasty. The most serious threat to Egypt's autonomy came from the Persians under whom Egypt was simply a satrapy or colony. Successful local dynasties did reclaim power before a the return of the Persians who were finally removed by Alexander the Great. This course will consider the ancient Egyptian Third Intermediate Periods and Late Periods, and the fascinating changes and continuity during these under-studied centuries.
