This day course will explore the life and personality of J. M.W Turner by examining his early life and experiences and the major contemporary influences on his developing style. We shall use our knowledge to analyse a selection of his major works, and finally, examine the huge influence he has had artists near and far.

Course aim

To study the life and artistic achievements of J.M.W. Turner through an exploration of his life and major works

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • No particular skill or experience is needed but an enthusiasm for learning and a desire to share ideas will help.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse the innovative aspects of Turner’s style and technique
  • Appreciate the major artistic influences on his work
  • Evaluate the importance of his work for future artistic developments
  • Understand how events of his life affected his character and his work
