Provided conditions permit a walking tour of the Abbey site will be included. Founded by Henry in 1121 with monks brought from Cluny in France, Reading Abbey became a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, and became one of the leading monastic sites in England. After dissolution of the Abbey in 1538 virtually all of the lead, glass and facing stone was removed. Recovery of dispersed carved stonework, most of which is now in the collection held by Reading Museum, has given an insight into the form of its Romanesque architectural decoration, in particular that of the cloister – which has some of the best - preserved carving of this period in England. It is believed that Henry I was buried before the high altar posing an intriguing question as to whether his remains could still be in place. Award in 2016 of Heritage Lottery funding enabled the Reading Abbey Revealed project to take forward conservation work and reopen the surviving elements of the Abbey.
