For someone new to the conflict, the Spanish civil war often seems a confusing alphabet soup of organisational initials. We will look to make sense of who was fighting and why. In doing so we will consider the extent to which the Spanish civil war was a step on the way to the wider European war which began in September 1939. Why did the dictators support Franco's nationalists? Should we see Franco as a Fascist? Why did he take so long to win the war? Why did the USSR not offer more support to the Republic? What was the legacy of the war and to what extent does it still impact on Spanish politics and memory today?
Course aim
The course will provide an introduction to the causes, course and consequences of the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939.

- explain why civil war broke out in Spain in 1936.
- explain, in broad terms, the outline of the conflict.
- explain the role of outside countries in the conflict.
- discuss the lasting legacy of the war.
