Architecture of 6 More Great Cities of the UK

Following on from the Cities in our online course in 2020, we are taking a standalone look at the historical development of architecture in six more of the great cities in England. We will take in their architecture - from medieval times to the confident creation of public buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries and through to the inventive modern work of more recent times. We will focus in this course on the dynamic manufacturing centres of Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle along with the cultural development enjoyed in Bath and the city of Brighton and Hove.

Course aim

To examine the historical development of architecture in six more great cities of the United Kingdom - identifying the development of their architectural styles over time.

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the key periods and styles of architecture seen in the great cities of the UK.
  • Link this architecture with the economic development of these key cities
  • See how influences from other countries in Europe flowed into the development of this architecture
  • Consider how the emergence of new building methods and materials contributed to this architecture
