There are 40 theatres in London’s West End. The oldest is the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane which dates from 1662, with the current building dating from 1811. Most of the theatres though were built between 1870 and 1930. One of the finest is the London Coliseum, the work of the renowned theatre architect, Frank Matcham. This presentation chronicles the history of both these theatres – the architecture, the shows and the those who have performed on their stages.
