Course aim
To analyse fictional texts from different periods which seek to represent their contemporary social/political situation
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- The course is appropriate for anyone with an interest in fiction and its techniques
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between historical context an fictional production
- identify the different techniques available in seeking to represent a whole society
- evaluate the success of the chosen texts in achieving a sense of representing a whole society
- identify other factors in evaluating a fictional text
What else do I need to know?
it would be useful to make a start on some of the set texts. Elizabeth Gaskell "North and South", E.M. Forster 'Howards End". The aims of the course are the same as that run under this title in the autumn term but each is free-standing.
