In November 1817, Princess Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent died unexpectedly in childbirth at the age of twenty-one. Her death plunged the country into mourning. As the child of a broken marriage, Charlotte was at the centre of a fierce family conflict. After a stressful childhood, she became a rebellious adolescent, but she found escape through a happy marriage, which made her early death all the more shocking. With the loss of the 'people's princess', the Hanoverian dynasty was plunged into a succession crisis that was only resolved by the birth of the future Queen Victoria.
Course aim
To look at the life of Princess Charlotte, the daughter of the Prince Regent and asses her significance, both personally and dynastically.

- Recognise her significance in the history of the British monarchy.
- Understand the importance of Charlotte's marriage for the European politics of the period.
- Understand the role played by gender politics in the period.
