In this short course we will investigate a handful of art works that have made an impression on the public in ways that are challenging and controversial. We will begin with an art work that today looks benign to us, Eduoard Manet's Dejeuner sur l'herbe and conclude with a more recent and in many ways very different work, Tracey Emin's Bed. We will look at three works in between, including paintings by Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock and an installation sculpture by Carl Andre - the infamous Tate Bricks. All these artists were pushing the boundaries of what was seen to be acceptable in fine art with their experiments, and all gained notoriety for their efforts. In this course we will try to better understand why these art works had such a great impact, and indeed continue to do so today.
