British Landscape Painting - 18th and early 19th to mid 20th century

Ref: C3746857

British artists began to excel in the genre of landscape painting in the middle of the 18th centuries, particularly with the development of watercolour paints that could easily be carried and used outdoors to sketch the scenery. When painters were prevented from travelling in Europe during the Napoleonic wars, this generation of artists turned to scenery on their doorstep and began to experiment with this subject matter and new techniques with spectacular results. The two most famous painters from this period to be covered in the first part of this course are John Constable and JMW Turner. In the 19th century the Pre-Raphaelites and others began to experiment with similar themes from nature, but in a different way, and in the early 20th century the great innovations of modernism began to influence British artists. We will look particularly in the second part of the course at the work of these 19th and 20th century artists, notably Paul Nash, John Piper and Graham Sutherland.
