While today, Artemisia Gentileschi’s name has been popularised by films and major exhibitions, not long ago she was all but forgotten, written out of the history of art. It is in the 1970s that her significance was first reclaimed, and scholars started studying her work. Nowadays, few would contest her status as one of the greatest painters of the Baroque. We will speak about her tumultuous –and, at times, tragic – life, and we will study some of her greatest paintings. We will depict her as one of many Italian Baroque painters, in other words, a product of a specific context; but also, as a truly unique and exceptional figure.
