We will examine the distinction between new free-standing public buildings and new construction alongside work of historic importance, and look at a number of case studies, including the work of Norman Foster (Berlin's Reichstag and British Museum Great Court) Jacques Hertzog and Pierre de Meuron (Tate Modern and its new extension), and Michael Hopkins (Norwich Cathedral's refectory).
Course aim
Is it a greater challenge for a modern architect to sympathetically expand the use of historic buildings, than to create new free-standing architecture? We will assess what a range of modern architects have achieved.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- contrast the way in which different architects have designed in the context of historic buildings
- describe the use of new and traditional materials in these projects
- consider some of the constraints eg World Heritage status or national listing as a historic site of special interest
