In the eighteenth century, Britain and France competed for maritime and colonial power. This class will look at Britain's conflicts with France and relations with other European nations. It will consider Britain's developing overseas trade and and role as a colonial power. The class will also look at the impact of the expansion of trade and of the army and navy at home. It will also consider the slave trade and the rise of the Abolition movement.
Course aim
This class will look at how Britain became the leading maritime, colonial and trading power in the eighteenth century.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Name the principal European powers in the eighteenth century
- Briefly describe the principal conflicts in which Britain was involved
- Briefly describe the principal events in Britain's colonial history in the eighteenth century
- Describe some of the ways in which these events had an impact at home.

Note taking is not required, but students who wish to take notes will need to bring suitable writing materials.
