To explore Local, House and Family History through a short series of case studies and informal tutorials presented by experienced Tutor, Jackie Depelle. A range of sources will be included which, when brought together could create an illustrated narrative to share with family, friends and the locality. The course content is planned to include aspects of family history, village and land records, academic studies plus elements of people and place analysis, Short pieces of similar written work are also much appreciated by the Editors of associated Society journals perhaps another interesting aspect of our course therefore a brief review of recording techniques will be included. New and returning students will be most welcome.

Course aim

To explore Local, House and Family History through a short series of case studies and informal tutorials presented by experienced Tutor, Jackie Depelle. Includes a range of sources which, when brought together could create an illustrated narrative.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List four sources, other than Census records, that can be used for both house history and a property's occupants
  • Report on how a timeline system can bring a person, place or property to life
  • Share with the group an outline where and why strategy for a speculative One Place Study
  • Illustrate the above theoretical project with an original document each for a person, property and place maybe with past and present images
  • Demonstrate having commenced a narrative profile for a person, building or village of personal interest
